A few weeks ago, Maaike of Maai Design emailed me to ask if I would sew something for her upcoming blog tour. What brilliant timing! I’d been looking for an excuse to use some of delicious Soft Cactus fabric for another pair of Carolyn PJs and it was perrrrrrrfect!
This is now the third full pair of Carolyn’s I’ve completed plus one pair still in construction. Why so many you ask? Well, apart from the fact that I’ve now met the lovely actual-Carolyn, PJ namesake, in real life and recognising she needs to be cloned many times over with one to be placed in every sewing room around the country, I’m also prepping for the Carolyn PJ course I’ll be running from the middle of the year as part of my Perth-based sewing classes business.
It took a while for me to decide which to choose, there were so many gorgeous prints. The geometric ones were calling to me as were the deers…
I eventually settled on the bears as a fun pattern for pjs but I definitely have my eye on some of these others which I think would be excellent for a cool men’s shirt – on my bucket list for 2016.
The Soft Cactus definitely lives up to it’s name with a slightly brushed feel resulting in a super comfy garment. Actually this would be the perfect weight for a full length pair of Carolyns for the mid-seasons, particularly in Perth where it only really gets chilly at night in June and July.
The fabric comes in 145cm width which is awesome because that meant only 2.5m was needed for this full set of PJs. At under $20 a metre it’s excellent value for money AND you can order in 25cm increments so it’s easy to get exactly how much you need.
I also ordered the pre-made piping from Maaike because it’s seriously the best quality cotton piping I’ve come across and sooooo reasonably priced. No way I’m making my own again.
Soft Cactus fabric is also Oeko-Tex certified which is an independent testing system for harmful substances. More info about that here if you’re interested.
As I did for my fox Carolyn’s, I made a straight size 10 and the fit is perfect and comfortable. This is version C but the pattern also comes with long pants and sleeves as well as the option to make it without the cuffs and piping (no need, see above).
This is now the second week of Maai’s blog tour and there have been some truly stunning Soft Cactus makes popping up around the country so far. It’s hard to pick a fave but I have to admit Suzanne’s version of Vogue 8280 left me a little weak at the knees. Be sure to pop over and check out all the goodness so far…
To celebrate her blog tour, Maaike is offering you all 10% off your purchase until March 26th, just pop in the code “maaidesign10%”.
Catch you again soon,
**p.s. Maaike offered a generous discount on my fabric purchase but as always, my opinions remain my own.
